It was a surprise when Sammy Harkham and Picture Box publisher Dan Nadel announced their plans for Kramers Ergot 8 about a year ago. Some of us had assumed that the monumental Kramers Ergot 7 had been the decadent word in what has been by far the most groundbreaking comics anthology of the new century.

Despite good intentions and hard work, Kramers Ergot 7 was a disappointment, but on the other hand it was a book with everything to lose and little to gain, and at any rate it marked a fitting finale to a great run.

As an aesthetic project, Kramers Ergot has succeeded beyond the wildest expectations, and especially the breakthrough Kramers Ergot 4 remains the high point of helmsman Sammy Harkham’s anthology series.

Kramers Ergot 4 marked nothing less than a paradigm shift. Although quite a few of the individual contributions were less than great, the synthesis it presented was seminal. It inspired many an art comics anthology the world over, including Matthias Wivel’s and my own BLÆK and the upcoming Kolor Klimax, as well as the great Finnish series Glömp, to name but a few examples from our neck of the woods.

Its two successors — 5 and 6 — were outstanding too; 6 especially mixed up the formula in a surprising way with remarkable short works by Suihō Tagawa and Marc Smeets.

From Gary Panter's "Jimbo" story

And now Kramers Ergot 8 is out. Lavishly produced in conventional book format, cloth bound and gold embossed, it delivers a perfect pastiche on seventies Science Fiction design. Pastiche? Yes, pastiche. The overture is a series of full spread illustrations by Robert Beatty that are not necessarily bad, but undeniably related to the kind of kitsch cosmic airbrush fantasies that were all the rage among street vendor-artists in the nineties.

This is followed by a sequel to Susan Sontag’s famous essay “Notes on Camp” entitled “Notes on Camp II,” written by the musician Ian Svenonius. Sontag’s original — and excellent — essay was an intelligent and much-needed challenge to the then-stagnating and hopelessly out-of-touch conception of high culture versus popular culture that legitimized the aesthetic appreciation of comics and other forms as art incompatible with high-art sensibilities. The present follow-up offers half-baked and half-bright babble on Andy Warhol, religious history, the Roman empire, and underground comics. A non-starter.

Then comes the first “real” comic, by none other than Gary Panter, whose reputation as the originator of American art comics (or punk comics) has deservedly grown in the last decade or so. But this outing of his signature Jimbo character is a dull, mechanical, metaphorical lark on the blessings of the detour. It does not exactly heighten one’s expectations for the rest of the book.

A few pages on we get Johnny Ryan with a Prison Pit-like rampage. Fun and energetic for what it is, but wait… it suddenly brings to mind Kramers Ergot 5, which spiked its great punch with Mat Brinkman’s small masterpiece “M.L.E,” a spirited mash-up of Jack Kirby and Gary Panter that established the kind of fucked-up mayhem on which Johnny Ryan has since been riffing in Prison Pit. Dejà vu or dull cover? It is hard to get particularly worked up about it in either case.

From Johnny Ryan's "Mining Colony X7170"

There are fine contributions in the book, but as a whole it is a sad disappointment, which above all suggests a crisis in American art comics. Porn and kitsch are the recurrent themes — not surprisingly a rather dry well to draw from — and the whole shebang is capped off by an historical seventies reprint of “Wicked Wanda,” a camp, soft porn indulgence by Frederic Mullally og Ron Embleton. Not exactly the most promising of artistic statements.

As an ensemble piece, Kramers Ergot 8 is tiring, uninspired and, most notably, decadent. If one compares with the shock and awe of holding Kramers Ergot 4 in one’s hands for the first time back in 2003, it is just a terribly depressing showing. That seductive, infectious, almost electrical feeling is long gone.

From the reprints of Ron Embleton and Frederic Mullalley's "Oh, Wicked Wanda"

Innovation, consolidation, dissolution, amen. It is the logical progression of a period of artistic development. But perhaps Harkham should have pulled the plug while he was still on top. Don’t get me wrong: Harkham is a great editor, a hugely important presence in art comics, Dan Nadel’s Picture Box is the most consistently exciting comics publisher in America, and Kramers Ergot was where it was at in 2003 and the years that followed — not just as a counterpoint to the excesses of industrial mainstream superheroics, but also to the bourgeois aspirations of the graphic novel movement. It was fresh as baby breath, the real deal. But now it is over.

(And where is that next shit today? I don’t know. I haven’t found it).

15. november, kl. 20: Tegneseriesalon i Literaturhaus

(OBS! Thorhauge her!)

Som en Frank Miller-figur siger i slutningen af Sin City-skrønen Family Values: “It’s a great, big, wide world out there, gentlemen. There’s all kinds of families in it“…

Set in the huge Manhattan Armoury, this year’s MoCCA festival started off slightly delayed, apparently because a shipment of books arrived too late from the MoCCA building, but never mind: the lines of people waiting to get in continued far around the block for almost the entire day. With (almost!) all kinds of comics represented, the exhibitor’s space sizzled with the electric air of the future.

The day clearly belonged to the Duke of American comics, the great David Mazzucchelli, whose long awaited graphic novel Asterios Polyp debuted at Pantheon’s booth. Saturday evening saw the opening of an almost unbelievably strong retrospective exhibition at MoCCA’s actual museum, curated by Picturebox’s boy wonder Dan Nadel — undoubtedly the absolute highlight of the festival, with original artwork from Batman: Year One, Daredevil: Born Again, Rubber Blanket stories (“Discovering America”, “Big Man”, “Near Miss”), Asterios Polyp and much more.

Although I myself participated in the lively Scandinavian panel discussion, I unfortunately missed all the other panels. Paul Karasik’s show seemed very exciting though. But on with the flix!

Jean Giraud, one of the major figures in comics history, is still alive and kicking. Neither he nor his alias Moebius seem particularly marked by age. As a matter of fact, it seems his output has never been bigger. Most notable, probably, is his series of self-indulgent improvisations, Inside Moebius, of which five volumes have been published so far, and then there is his virtuosic — and energetic — return to Major Grubert in Chasseur Déprime (selected by Matthias Wivel, Henry Sørensen and myself amongst the comics of the year 2008).

But while Moebius after an extended period of creative insolvency (who would not rather forget the exploitation piece Le Nouveau rêve of 2001?) has only recently caught his second — or third, or fourth? — wind, Jean Giraud has never experienced this kind of crisis. The classic western series Blueberry continued at full steam after the death of its writer and co-creator, Jean-Michel Charlier, in 1989. Giraud’s five-part cycle ‘Mr. Blueberry’ (which features two of the greatest legend of the Wild West, Geronimo and Wyatt Earp; read more here and here) was an exhilarating read, from start to finish, not the least because Giraud managed to integrate into the series his particular artistic sensibility while remaining loyal to the Blueberry universe (and at the same time, he mustered the opportunistic energy to draw an album in Jean van Hammes popular but ordinary Robert Ludlum pastiche XIII).

I am unaware of the future plans for Lieutenant Blueberry, but the latest album in the series ties together the earliest and most recent chapters and if nothing else conveys a sense of full circle on the part of its author. Apaches collects and expands the flashbacks that were featured all along the main narrative of Blueberry vols. 24-28 and retold the story of how the young Blueberry met the legendary Indian chief Geronimo.

Shortly after the end of the Civil War, a deeply alcoholic but nevertheless noble and daring Blueberry is on the way to serve at Fort Mescalero. In addition to the cavalry, the fort houses an orphanage where Indian children are educated according to Christian precepts. It so happens that one of the children is Geronimo’s son Dust, which naturally causes problems with the neighboring Apaches. Blueberry is cast in opposition to the unsavory Pastor Younger and the two debate expositorily the nuts and bolts of colonialist us-and-them discourse…

The many faces of Pastor Younger …

And let it be said: Apaches is not a great work of comics, but if you are a fan of Blueberry and Giraud/Moebius it is a wonderfully energizing read. Giraud draws in lush detail and with great enthusiasm and once again puts to shame the notion that drawn naturalism is unsuited for comics. The plot is acceptable; although the points Giraud makes that have to do with the reeducation facility and the Indian children are rather heavy-handed, he for example gets a lot of mileage out of the Fort’s lack of firewood. One soon forgives the clumsy voiceover at the beginning and gives in to Giraud’s cheekily subversive tendency to draw the villain of the piece, Pastor Younger, differently each time he appears (although he remains a caricature of Moebius’ old friend Jodorowsky throughout) as more of a fun creative indulgence than a mistake.

Predictably, the story is garnished with quite a lot more Indian shamanism than Charlier would have been comfortable with, and the unsubtle portayal of the Indians as the good guys and the cavalry as the bad guys is just business as usual. Not surprisingly, however, the main attraction is Giraud’s drawings of people, clothes, buildings, landscapes, and so on, as well as his enjoyment of humorous incident and silly facial expressions. It just does not get much better than this.

More than anything, Apaches is generous and enjoyable piece of work, even if the album is not exactly an essential chapter in the saga of Lieutenant Blueberry. More generally, however, it conveys the rare, and rather life-affirming experience of seeing someone vigorous and enthusiastically creative in old age.

Jean Giraud, Apaches, Paris: Dargaud, 2007. This text appears in Danish on my blog and is translated for the Bunker by Matthias Wivel.
