Picks of the Week

comics and cartooning, current affairs, hype & linkageBy Matthias Wivel12 January 2009

“The collapse of daily print journalism will mean many things. For those of us old enough to still care about going out on a Sunday morning for our doorstop edition of The Times, it will mean the end of a certain kind of civilized ritual that has defined most of our adult lives. It will…

Hype: The Dot and the Line

comics and cartooning, hype & linkage, pictorial artsBy Matthias Wivel3 January 2009

If you’re in Virginia, the Migration Gallery in Charlottesville is currently showing works by Warren Craghead and Brian Mallman. Mallman I didn’t know anything about — his work looks interesting — but I’ve been pushing Craghead’s for a while. He will be showing pages from several recent books, including How to Be Everywhere, one of…

Picks of the Week

comics and cartooning, current affairs, hype & linkage, music, pictorial artsBy Matthias Wivel14 December 2008

The picks of the week from around the web. Slightly slim pickings this week, owing to the fact that I’ve been on internet-free holiday. I do however have these recommendations for you: Warren Craghead: “A Flame Expelled.” Top Shelf hosts this short lyrical comic from one of the most compelling experimental comics makers at the…

Læs hele herligheden her.

Picks of the Week

comics and cartooning, current affairs, hype & linkage, lettersBy Matthias Wivel7 December 20082 Comments

The picks of the week from around the web. The New York Times: Bill Ayers responds. Op-ed piece from the recently much-maligned former Weatherman Bill Ayers. Succint and to the point, with plenty of things to disagree with. The comments section by the way contains some excellent discussion. A couple of great comics links. “The…

Hype: Anders Nilsen — Landscapes and Smoke

comics and cartooning, hype & linkage, pictorial artsBy Matthias Wivel3 December 2008

If you’re in LA you should really, really consider going to Anders Nilsen’s first solo show, which opens at LitteBird Gallery this Saturday. Nilsen himself says that it’s “a bunch of big drawings, a few gouache paintings and a few covers from Big Questions. Included are Batman, Captain America, The Archangel Gabriel, Adam and Eve…

Hype: Mongo Business — Updated!

comics and cartooning, hype & linkageBy Matthias Wivel2 December 2008

Danish cartoonist Ib Kjeldsmark is currently doing a strip called Mongo Business for the bi-weekly branch mag Markedsføring. It’s worth a look — Ib is a great visual stylist the hollowed-out bullshit Buddishm metaphor he makes use of works well for his irreverent anti-authoritarian satire. It’s in Danish, unfortunately, but check it out anyway, for…

Tak, Søren

comics and cartooning, hype & linkage, journalBy Matthias Wivel25 November 2008

Picks of the Week

“Obama’s victory is a sign of history in the triple Kantian sense of signum rememorativum, demonstrativum, prognosticum. A sign in which the memory of the long past of slavery and the struggle for its abolition reverberates; an event which now demonstrates a change; a hope for future achievements. The scepticism displayed behind closed doors even…

Hype: Jason in The Comics Journal

Just thought I’d hype this — the latest issue of The Comics Journal (#294) contains a career-spanning interview with Norwegian star cartoonist Jason, conducted by yours truly. An excerpt is available at the TCJ site, with the entirety of the magazine available to subscribers, and hardcopies will be available in stores in a fortnight’s time.…

Emphatically the track of the week. Listen to it here, and go here for the classic album. Gore Vidal on BBC’s election…

Picks of the Week

current affairs, film, tv, video, hype & linkageBy Matthias Wivel3 November 2008

The picks of the week from around the web. We’re still unable to talk about much else than the US elections here at the Bunker, but not to worry — it’ll all be over in a couple of days. David Bordwell on the narratives of the Obama and McCain campaigns. Great analysis of the stories…

Picks of the Week

The picks of the week from around the web. Just returned from Venice; pardon the lateness… The Little World of Harvey Kurtzman. A new blog showcasing the amazing work of Harvey Kurtzman, apparently run by his estate. So far, a healthy selection of material from his classic humour magazines, Humbug and Help! are up. Not…

Hype: Majors — Suckers Never Play Me!

commentary and criticism, hype & linkage, musicBy Matthias Wivel26 October 2008

Danish rap supergroup Majors have just dropped a new single, reprising “Suckers Never Play Me,” arguably the best track on their fine, eponymously titled album, released earlier this year. It’s available for free download from their website, and is well worth it if you’re into traditional hardcore hip hop.
