Hej Signe! Did you look at the Assyrian Lion Hunt relief? Pure comics, and better than just about anything made since then. And yeah, take a look at the catalogue for the Book of the Dead show — it obviously cannot reproduce everything (some of the scrolls were looong), but it gives you a good impression and the scholarship is solid, far as I remember.

Matthias! Just found your post about the Book of the Dead through your comment on nummer9. Last weekend I went to The British Museum and I thought that there is so much cartooning going on in old egyptian art. Thanks for this post. Very interesting! I will get a copy of the book form the exhibition.

Thanks! Yeah, have a look at it — there’s even a small painting of anthropomorphic animals walking on two feet. They look pretty much exactly like modern cartoon characters.

But beyond that, this is simply fantastic art, of the kind that — at least when experienced in such profusion — cannot but help make you ponder basic conditions of life. I was really, really moved by this show.

Thanks for posting about this, Matthias. I can’t go see the show, but Harvard U put out a US edition of the accompanying book, which looks very nice.
