Considering his importance, it’s quite striking how under the radar Pekar had become in recent years. It’s a little like the Hernandez Brothers–he had been around for so long that most people took him for granted and stopped paying attention, despite the fact that he was still producing at a steady pace.

I know I did–I haven’t read much by him since Our Cancer Year, and I’ve heard that not all of it is up to snuff, but I think I shall go look closer for myself now.

A good read, and a fitting epitaph for a true comics pioneer. Pekar had an eye for the extraordinary in everyday life, and it’s testament to his skill as both observer and storyteller that his yarns resonate without the use of plot of punchlines.

His work in comics has been extremely varied, ranging from philosophical monologues and pointed anectodes to biographies and the wistfully straightforward accounts of everyday life that have earned him both accolades and criticism.

At his best, Pekar showed the beauty of everyday life, calling attention to the merit of the humdrum and the aesthetic of the working class. His worst has always been a matter of some debate, but it’s hard to deny his place in comics history. As a chronicler of the mundane, as a poet of the everyman and as a consistent storyteller, he will be sorely missed.
